Electron Microscopy

Electron Microscopy Department

The main research focus of the Electron Microscopy and Histopathology Department in the past 20 years has been in the areas of enteric diarrhoeas with special emphasis on rotavirus. Through its diarrhoea surveillance studies, the Department has helped to firmly establish rotaviruses as a major cause of diarrhoea in children, and document the circulation of unusual rotavirus genotypes in Ghana. The Department has also recently expanded its diagnostic repertoire to include the identification and characterization of noroviruses, astroviruses, and other enteric viruses.

The Electron Microscopy and Histopathology Department is a key member of the African Rotavirus Surveillance Network (ARSN), a network setup to initiate and facilitate childhood diarrhoea disease burden studies and rotavirus surveillance activities across Africa. The Department provides technical and administrative support and training to the ARSN for senior scientists and technicians from the West African sub-region in rotavirus diagnosis, the molecular characterization of enteric viruses, and electron microscopy techniques in identification of viruses.

The department provides laboratory space and support for post graduate and undergraduate training to students from the university of Ghana as well as universities from the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) region. The Department under the auspices of the African Rotavirus network and with support from the WHO, has hosted and facilitated two training workshops in rotavirus epidemiology and characterization for participants from Africa.
