Short Biography

Professor Michael Wilson is a senior scientist at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana. He received his Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences at University of Salford, UK (1994) and had postdoctoral training with Professor Rory J. Post at Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands. He was recently a staff of WHO/TDR (2009-2010) and before then the Deputy Director of the Institute (2004-2009).

Professor Wilson was the 1st Programme Manager of the West African Centre for International Parasite Control – an establishment of the Japan’s Global Parasite Control Initiative (1999-2004).   His main field isonchocerciasis control and he was instrumental in developing the multivariate taxonomy approach for routine morphological identification of Simulium damnosum vectors in West Africa. He was also the leader of the team that established the feasibility and developed the operational strategy to eliminate onchocerciasis through vector eradication from the island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea (1999-2003).

Professor Wilson’s current research focuses on meeting the challenges of sustainable neglected tropical diseases control and the effects of environmental changes.

He has served on several local and international bodies including the Advisory Board of Mebendazole Donation Initiative established by Johnson & Johnson Inc., USA (2005-2009). He is also a scientific advisor to the Lymphatic Filariasis Support Centre for Africa and a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
