It is my pleasure to welcome you to join us at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Ghana’s leading biomedical research institute at the University of Ghana. The Institute has over the years embarked on a series of initiatives to upgrade its research infrastructure and human capacity to attract the world’s best scientists, technologists, postdoctoral fellows, postgraduate students, undergraduate interns, and health professionals through training and experiential learning. Our community continues to grow and we are happy to share our research, training and learning experience with you.
At the NMIMR, we conduct both laboratory and field-based research into communicable and non-communicable diseases of public health importance; led by researchers in nine departments of the institute, namely Animal Experimentation, Bacteriology, Clinical Pathology, Electron Microscopy and Histopathology, Epidemiology, Immunology, Nutrition Parasitology, and Virology. Whether you are a scientist, student, donor or grantor, the institute presents you with attractive transformative research projects designed to promote advances at the frontiers of knowledge and the development of intervention tools for community transformation.
Since its establishment in 1979 in honour of the renowned Japanese scientist “Dr. Hideyo Noguchi” the NMIMR has gained global recognition as a leading biomedical research institute in Africa, building capacity for prevention and control of endemic diseases, as well as emerging and re-emerging diseases, in Ghana and the West African sub-region. In the 1920s Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, dedicated his life to the service of humanity saving lives during the major yellow fever outbreak in West Africa, and now for decades, the Institute has been a leader in providing effective diagnosis of infections including HIV/Aids, H1N1 Pandemic Flu, LASSA fever, Yellow fever, and Ebola Virus Disease among others. This achievement is made possible through a dynamic relationship established among local researchers, technologists, students and health professionals working together in research networks with our external collaborators.
This year is the 90th anniversary of the arrival of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi in Ghana for his historic mission, and we are preparing to organize the Memorial Symposium in November 2017. The Institute will build on its well established multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary research environment to involve our collaborators and partners from nations all around the world. We are happy to invite you to join us at these celebrations to honour ground breaking research in Africa.
As Director, I am dedicated to promote the highest levels of international accreditation for research management and implementation at the Institute, and to promote evidence-based research designed to bridge the research policy-divide and research to development-divide. The NMIMR is the Flagship for health research at the University of Ghana, and it is committed to make significant contributions to the growth of the University by strengthening research as its strongest pillar for improved performance in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
As a research institute within the University of Ghana, we share the objective to “ensure that our governance structures, and support systems work proactively, effectively and efficiently to achieve our strategic priorities;” whilst providing leadership in protecting public health in Ghana and beyond.
I encourage you to reach out to us for a life-changing experience in research, training and learning. Our slogan is “Noguchi Excellence” and we respond “Working as a Team”.
