Immunology Department

The Department of Immunology conducts research in the field of immunology of infectious and non-infectious diseases. The Department has the overall goal of contributing knowledge to better diagnosis, management, control and prevention of infectious and non-infectious diseases in Ghana and worldwide. This is consistent with the overall strategy of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and in line with the strategy of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana. In fulfillment of this goal the department conducts research into

  • The pathogenesis of major infectious and non-infectious diseases, especially malaria in children and pregnant women, and measles by studying immunological and molecular mechanisms that affect the relationship between the human host and pathogens,
  • Conducts studies leading to the identification and evaluation of potential malaria vaccine candidates and
  • Carries out research aimed at improving on existing immunodiagnostic tests. All of these activities are aimed at improving human health, comfort and wellbeing in Ghana and worldwide.

Expertise available in the department includes cellular, humoral and molecular immunology. The techniques available include flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, elispot, B cell transformation, microarray and fluorescent microscopy.
