Department of Parasitology Holds Annual Management Review Meeting

Top Management of the Department of Parasitology held its Annual Management Review Meeting at Koforidua from the 26th July to 29th July, 2020. This annual meeting which was attended by all fellows of the Department and members of the Department Quality Team reviewed core activities of the Department for the year 2019 and also set new targets for the ensuing year 2020. The Department of Parasitology is ISO 9001:2015 certified and on a SLIPTA programme towards accreditation to 15189:2012. The Department aims to further strengthen its Laboratory Quality Management System and expand it to affect all other Departments and Units in the Institute.

The three-day meeting was chaired by the Head of Department, Dr. Samuel K. Dadzie, and moderated by the Quality Manager, Dr. Charles Quaye. In assessing the outputs of the Department based on the quality objectives set for 2019, Top Management was generally satisfied with the performance indicators although some challenges were observed. The Department exceeded the publications target of 36 with 38 publications. The rate of incidence was also reported to have reduced by 37%, significantly higher than the targeted reduction of 10% annually. Areas where challenges were observed included internal audits and interlaboratory comparisons.

Notable in the discussions during this meeting was the review of the Department of Parasitology Research and Development (R&D) Agenda, and the Research Agenda. A clear action plan was set to actualize these agenda to improve the personnel, financial and grantsmanship strength of the Department. Top Management also expanded the scope of research in the Department to include other tropical infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases and recommended these changes to reflect in the Department of Parasitology’s Quality Policy Statement. New quality objectives were set for 2020.

Dr. Samuel Dadzie thanked all for their efforts and commitment in maintaining the certification status of the Department and encouraged staff to stay compliant to the Quality Management Systems of the Department. Fourteen staff of the Department were present at the Capital View Hotel in Koforidua with others joining the sessions through Google Meet.
