NMIMR Signs MoU With Yale University

Yale University, an American private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut over a decade ago established an unyielding partnership with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana Legon. This Partnership has since led the two institutions in attaining ground breaking results which led to the visit of the 23rd President, Mr. Peter Salovey to Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. (NMIMR) on 12th March 2018. His visit was earmarked to renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Yale and NMIMR and also to establish new partnership with the School of Medicine and Dentistry

According to Mr. Salovey, his psychology background has influenced him to establish partnerships across the world and allowed him to appreciate the profoundness of the partnership the two institute share, thus fostering research collaboration within the faculty and student exchange.

He further stated that “the collaborative relationship between Yale and NMIMR has allowed the two Universities to share expertise with NGOs, business communities and government ministries to solve human problems and reduce the burden of infectious diseases.

He however, emphasized on the research findings from Noguchi and Yale Collaborations which he forcefully stated, may have led to the discovery of global medicine for the treatment of HIV and Malaria. ‘I hope through our shared commitment we will continue to work together collaboratively to produce fantastic global health research and continue to educate talented young people and ultimately reduce the burden of infectious diseases.” He reiterated.

Mr. Salovey added that this partnership has become a model for other countries including South Africa, Kenya, Jamaica, Brazil, etc.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony Prof. Elijah Paintsil of Yale School of Medicine and Institute for Global Health recounted the success of the partnership which started in 2006. He used the occasion to expressed his profound gratitude to the Ex-President, John Agyekum Kuffuor for giving the seed money which started the Yale NMIMR exchange programme. He was also grateful to Prof David Ofori-Adjei and Prof Michael David Wilson former Director and Deputy Director of the Institute respectively.



The Director for NMIMR Prof. Kwabena Mante Bosompem was thankful to have Yale University being one of its trusted partners, with regards to research support and building of an infrastructure for grantsmanship and also overseeing research project.

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), set up in 1979 as a semi autonomous institute of the University, is the leading biomedical research facility in Ghana.
